Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Recent developments in our understanding of the genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology of iron transport in fungi is reviewed with special emphasis on findings from Ustilago maydis, the causal agent of corn smut disease. This is the best described fungal high affinity iron transport system that relies on siderophores (microbial iron transport chelators) to mediate iron uptake. Recent progress on reductive iron uptake in yeast is also reviewed.
