Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Late maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality testing has been conducted from 1977 to the present. During 20 years (including 1996) of testing late maturity germplasm, 650 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by two universities and 52 private companies. For 1996, 19 of 47 entries are new to the test. Early maturity, white food-grade performance and grain quality (quality data reported beginning in 1988) testing has been done since 1984. During 13 years of testing, 331 hybrids from public and private sources have been evaluated. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by three universities and 40 private companies. For 1996, 18 of 60 entries are new to the test and one new company is participating. In 1986, a yellow food-grade corn testing program, similar to that for white food-grade corn, was initiated. For 1996, the test was split into late and early maturities. During the first 10 years of testing, before splitting on maturities, 303 hybrids from public and private sources were evaluated. Fourteen new hybrids of 24 total are in the late maturity test for 1996 and 11 new hybrids of 21 total are in the early maturity test. Hybrids have been submitted for evaluation by five universities and 41 private companies. One new company is participating in each test for 1996. Data on European corn borer tolerance is obtained for all tests, and data on virus tolerance is obtained for the late maturity white food corn performance test. Grain quality data that are common across tests include test weight, kernel weight, kernel density, and pericarp removal. Additional quality variables are given for yellow food corn.
