Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Six Angus steers (278 + 1 kg) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas were used in a 6X6 Latin Square digestion trial to evaluate poultry byproduct meal (PBM) as a source of supplemental N for ruminants. Treatments were soybean meal (SBM) and 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% PBM with urea used to balance for N. Periods were 14 d with 10 d adaptation and 4 d for collection. Steers were fed at 2% of BW in 12 equal portions/d. Diets were formulated to contain 11.5% CP and consisted of 49% corn silage, 36% cottonseed hulls and 15% supplement (DM basis). Apparent ruminal and total tract DM and OM disappearance (RDMD, ROMD, TTDMD and TTOMD, respectively) were greater for SBM compared with the 100 (P < .01) and 0% (P < .05) PBM treatments. Duodenal non-ammonia N (DNAN), ileal N (IN), and fecal N (FN) flows increased linearly (P < .01) with PBM. The 100% treatment increased (P < .01) DNAN, IN, FN flows compared with SBM, while SBM increased (P < .05) DNAN flow compared with 0% PBM. Total tract N disappearance (TTND) decreased linearly (P < .01) with PBM addition whereas SBM had greater TTND than 100% or 0% (P < .05). Poultry byproduct meal increased total N flows to the small intestine compared with SBM while decreasing the proportion of N disappearing from the gastrointestinal tract.
