Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Oral dosing with Lb has been shown to ameliorate C. parvum infection in SCID mice and human AIDS patients. To further study this phenomenon, we infected C57BL/6 mice with LP-BM5 retrovirus to produce the murine AIDS syndrome (MAIDS). Following development of MAIDS, groups of mice were dosed orally with either Lb or phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS) for 10 days. Both groups were then given an oral challenge of C. parvum oocysts. Lb or PBS treatments continued for an additional 10 days. Three weeks following challenge, mice were killed and examined for infection with C. parvum. In addition, fecal pellets for the ten days prior to termination of the study were collected from each mouse, dried and weighed. Mice treated with Lb were less infected with C. parvum than were mice treated with PBS. In addition, the mean daily fecal output from mice in the Lb group was significantly less than that from mice in the PBS group. These results support previous studies indicating that Lb dosing may be of benefit in chronic C. parvum infection in immunocompromised hosts.
