Serums were heat-inactivated and globulin-depleted. Cells were washed and incubated with each of 17 lectins in 10 mM HEPES buffered saline, pH 8.4 with 0.1 mM CaC12 and 0.08% sodium azide. Overall, agglutination profiles did not vary with 10 of 17 lectins. Agglutination with peanut agglutinin, Sophora japonica agglutinin, Phaseolus vulgaris leucoaggluti- nin, and Narcissus pseudonarcissus lectin were different among L101 incubated in saline and saline with ovine or bovine serum. Similarly, agglutination with Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin, Narcissus pseudonarcissus lectin, Pisum sativum agglutinin, and Maackia amurensis lectin II were different among 82-25 incubated in saline or saline with ovine or bovine serum. Altered profiles indicate a change in the bacterial surface possibly by absorption or alteration of surface carbohydrate moieties by serum constituents. |
