Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: To elucidate the molecular mechanism of hopperburn, we sought to determine the major components of potato leafhopper saliva. To obtain saliva proteins, about 200 adult potato leafhoppers were fed on diet cubes comprised of agarose and sucrose. Proteins were electro-eluted from the diet cubes into a buffer. To obtain salivary gland proteins, glands were dissected from adult potato leafhopper, and the soluble protein content wa actively diffused into a buffer. The protein content from both saliva and salivary glands were separated by charge and size using vertical and continous flow electrophoresis.
