Publication Type: Abstract Only Publication Acceptance Date: 4/17/1997 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Food quality corn distillers' grains (CDG) and soy protein isolates (SPI) were each reacted thermochemically with citric acid (CA) to yield potentially biodegradable products with high cation exchange properties. Optimized reaction conditions to maximize carboxylation and minimize crosslinking samples were heated for 24 h at 110 deg C for CDG to achieve 4.30 mmol COOH/g CDG-CA and at 120 deg C for SPI to accomplish 4.13 mmol COOH/g SPI-CA. The SPI-CA complex was water soluble while the CDG-CA complex was not. These CDG-CA and SPI-CA complexes effectively bound 1.08 and 1.18 mmol Cu+2/g, respectively, when analyzed by ion plasma spectrometry. Solid state NMR support the cationic binding characteristics of these citrate complexes. |
