Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The extent of technological advances in this century is unprecedented in the history of humankind. Consequently, the world is more complex. The partially negative impact of most technologies has led to sweeping judgements of technology as either good or bad. The impact of a grossly inadequate educational system for science and mathematics is coupled to the euse of television as the primary communications medium with oversimplified presentations and tendency toward sensationalism. Judgements about agricultural biotechnology inevitably get enmeshed with issues of food safety. Acceptance of agricultural biotechnology depends on a better concept of the nature of a technology and its consequences for humans and the environment. Public awareness must be enhanced first by dramatically increasing the level of science education for all students; all citizens must understand enough science to be able to make intelligent judgements about technology. Issues pertaining to science and technology must be given more balanced coverage in the media. Scientists must take the lead in bringing about a revitalization of science education in the United States and personally get involved in dissemination of information at all levels.
