The thyroiditis is exacerbated by high dietary iodine (I). Vanadium (V) affects diabetes and the response to dietary I. Thus, to ascertain whether the BB rat is a sensitive model to use for the study of V nutrition, male weanling BB/Wor rats were assigned to groups of f 8 in a 3-way 2 x 2 x 2 factorially arranged experiment. Diabetes- resistant (DR) and DP rats were fed an acid-washed ground corn and casein based diet (containing about 50 ng I and 2 ng V/g) supplemented with V at 0 (-V) or 0.5 (+V) ug/g and I at 0 (-I) and 25 (+I) ug/g. The rats were fed ad lib their respective diets for 90 days. Only one (+I) of the 16 -V DP rats developed diabetes, whereas four (one -I, and three +I) of the 16 +V DP rats developed diabetes; these rats were not included in the following comparisons. Plasma T4 concentrations were lower and T3 concentrations were higher in +V than -V rats fed -I; +I changed the +V values such that they were not different than the -V values, which were not markedly affected by dietary I. Pancreatic amylase activity was lower in +V than -V rats, and was decreased by +I in +V DP rats and -V DR rats; amylase was not affected by dietary I in the +V DR rats or -V DP rats. Serum lactate dehydrogenase activity was increased in +V rats fed +I, but decreased in -V rats fed +I. The findings indicate that the BB rat is an excellent model for the study of the nutritional importance of V, which apparently involves thyroid and glucose metabolism. |
