Technical Abstract: 'Red Hawk' dark red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was jointly developed and released by the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA/ARS in 1997 as a full-season, disease resistant cultivar with excellent processing quality. Red Hawk was developed to incorporate earliness, anthracnose and halo blight resistances and superior processing quality into the Dark Red Kidney Bean Market Class. Red Hawk possesses the Co-1 and Co-2 genes which condition resistance to all known North American races of anthracnose. Red Hawk is immune to the indigenous rust races prevalent in Michigan and carries the single dominant hypersensitive I gene resistance to Bean Common Mosaic Virus. Red Hawk averaged 2,190 kg ha-1 over 36 locations from 1990-96. Red Hawk has a large dark red kidney seed which averages 62g 100 seed-1 and is similar in size to its parent Montcalm but smaller than the commercial cultivar Isles. In canning trials, ,Red Hawk had excellent quailty and a trained panel of judges rate it 4.3 on a five-point hedonic scale where 1 and 5 indicate the minimum and maximum expression of the trait, respectively. In instrument based canning quality evaluations, Red Hawk did not differ from other commercial dark red kidney bean cultivars for cooked color, hydration and washed drained weight rations. Texture was estimated with an Allo-Kramer Shear Press and Red Hawk averaged 79 kg 100g-1 which fell slightly outside the range of shear force 65-75 kg 100g-1 which indicates a dark red kidney bean with an ideal shear press score. |
