Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A crop-weed parameter electronic handbook (Ebook) to facilitate data access and exchange on the world wide web has been developed. The software opens a handbook on the screen and lets a user access rop-weed parameters, such as leaf expansion rates under certain growth conditions. Parameters are being derived and summarized, based on field experimental records and other research data from the South Farm of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Each page of the book displays a set of information for the user, including the growth events or stages (such as Growing Degree days or GDD) for weeds and crops. Relationships between growth events and a factor under certain environmental conditions are specified in a comment section. Relationships are expressed into mathematical patterns. Eight fitting functions to the 4th order, including Exponential, Gompertz, Logistics, Logarithmic and Linear, are used in the book. Coefficients of derived functions, as well as r**2 values and standard deviations, are listed and the functions are plotted. Contributors of experimental data and authors of derived results can be cited for credit and possible further contact. EBook now contains several built-in data sets, including parameters for crops and weeds such as soybean, corn and velvetleaf, with the most recent additions for spring wheat, oats, barley, English pea, tall bluestem, cup plant, burdock and potato. EBook is mainly developed for cross-plat forms in Java. It runs either as an Applet at a web site or as a stand-alone application. The user shares his own data with others by adding data pages into EBook. EBook has also been developed in Visual C++ for users in the Windows 95 environment.
