Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: DMAc/LiCl has become a favored solvent in the analysis of polysaccharides. Although much is understood about its interaction with carbohydrate molecules, a great deal remains to be known in order for a comprehensive mechanism of dissolution to be discerned. These limitations, however, have not precluded the extended use of DMAc/LiCl in the study of chitin, cellulose, etc. This article reviews the theory of DMAc/LiCl as a solvent new developments in this area, as well as the variety of applications which have been found for it.
