Interpretive Summary: Evaluations of linear type traits receive direct economic emphasis in breed association indexes, indirect emphasis in calculating productive herdlife and are often displayed in advertising. Detection of genetic markers located near important gene controlling these traits might be rewarding to breeders and also to researchers. The objective of this study was to identify DNA markers that could be used in the selection of bulls. Sixteen DNA markers were studied in seven large US Holstein families. Variations with some of these DNA markers were associated with significant effects for dairy form, feet and leg traits and udder depth. A potential site affecting both udder depth and somatic cell score (an indicator of mastitis) was identified in chromosome 23.

Technical Abstract: Quantitative trait lock (QTL) affecting confirmational type traits were studied in seven large US Holstein families using the granddaughter design. Genotyping was completed for sixteen microsatellite markers on ten chromosomes. Marker allele differences pooled across and with familes are reported. Potential QTL for dairy form, feet and leg traits and udder depth were identified. A potential QTL affecting both udder depth and somatic cell score was identified on chromosome 23.
