Relative to strain 501R3, strain A-11 has reduced colonization ability in radish and cucumber spermosphere but not in sweet corn or pea spermosphere with assays carried out in natural soil or sterile sand. Strain 501R3 was capable of growth on thirteen of sixteen carbohydrates in aqueous seed extracts detected by gas chromatography. Strain A-11 was capable of wildtype growth on only one of these carbohydrates, fructose. Both strains 501R3 and A-11 had equivalent growth on all amino acids and organic acids tested. Levels of carbohydrate and amino acids in seed exudates, as determined by anthrone and ninhydrin assays, respectively, were highest with sweet corn and pea and lowest with cucumber and radish. The data suggest that the impact on the mutation in strain A-11 is greatest in spermospheres that exude the least carbohydrate and amino acid. |
