Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have been investigating the erosion processes involved in earthen spillway performance. This has resulted in studies of spillway performance at some 125 earthen auxiliary spillways in 11 states between 1983 and 1993. As a result of this effort there have been field and dlaboratory procedures and terminology developed for use in the determination of parameters important to erosion processes. These procedures even though developed in studying spillway performance have application in other areas such as dam overtopping, channel stability, levees, and bridge scour. The purpose of this paper is to describe two of these developments: (1) the erosion resistance classification of soils by the jet index method, and (2) an empirical classification system originally developed for classifying the rippability of earth materials used to generate an erodibility index.
