Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Recent developments in our understanding of the molecular biology of iron transport in fungi are reviewed with special emphasis on findings from Ustilago maydis, the causal agent of corn smut disease. This is the best described fungal high affinity iron transport system that relies on siderophores (microbial iron transport chelators) to mediate iron uptake. This work is contrasted to reductive iron uptake system of yeast.
