Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Concerns about negative impacts of current weed control practices have caused many weed scientists and agricultural producers to consider alternative weed management strategies. In recent times, weed control practices for major crops have been influenced greatly by the availability of selective herbicides. The impact of herbicides has been so dominating that weed science is often perceived to be the science of herbicides rather than the science of weeds. A shift away from dependence on herbicides is complicated by our poor understanding of weed biology and ecology and the lack of alternative weed control tactics. Changes in weed management can be attained within the framework of existing cropping systems. However, given the lack of options, a major effort to develop new methods and approaches to weed management is needed. Weed scientists need to play a central role in the development of new cropping systems to make weed management an integral component of the system rather than continuing a reactive approach to weeds. This volume presents several innovative approaches to weeds and weed management. It is our hope that this volume will stimulate discourse on a broader view of weeds and weed management.
