Absorption patterns observed in the near-infrared region, however, arise from overtones of primary, mid-infrared absorbances. Mid-infrared absorbances are very distinct and, unlike their near-infrared counterparts, can often be assigned to specific chemical moieties. While the fundamental information provided by mid-infrared absorption patterns is very powerful, obtaining a signal in this region from a solid material, such as corn, is a challenge. Several techniques recently have been developed which provide suitable mid-infrared spectra from solids, two of which (Photoacoustic Spectroscopy and Transient Infrared Spectroscopy) are further discussed. |
