Envenomation arrests larval-larval ecdysis and results in an accumulation of storage protein in the hemolymph of young larvae in excess of the normal titer found in the last larval stage. Whole larvae mRNA were compared from normal and parasitized host larvae during the fourth-instar course of development. Northern blots showed that the storage protein transcript level had significantly increased in parasitized fourth-instar larvae. These results suggest that E. comstockii venom regulates the production of storage proteins at the level of mRNA. |
