Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fundamental plant processes (e.g. photosynthesis, leaf expansion,...), environmental factors such as soil characteristics, weather data, etc., and state-variables were coded as objects into Java classes based upon agronomic theory, experimental data, and published models. An internet-based plant growth simulation model was developed. This model has a user-friendly interface running on the world wide web. One can link to the runtime model from our website (http://th190-50.agn.uiuc.edu). The user can then input site-specific agronomic data such as location, weather, soil, plant genetic parameters, planting date, stand density, irrigation timing and amounts, etc. Model output is then displayed in figure and text forms, by clicking the appropriately marked "buttons" for state-variables: leaf and internode phenological events, LAI, leaf weight, internode length, stem weight, plant height, daily net photosynthesis, biomass, canopy/root, evapotranspiration, soil water content, or plant water stress. The output can be printed if desired.
