Weaning weights of Brahman, Belgian Blue, Angus and Hereford sired progeny were heavier than Piedmontese, Boran, and Tuli sired progeny. Steers by Hereford, Angus, and Belgian Blue sires were heavier at slaughter (447 days) than progeny b Brahman, Piedmotnese, Boran, or Tuli sires. Carcasses from progeny of Belgian Blue and Piedmontese sires had 5 to 9% higher percentage retail product than progeny of other sire breeds. Longissimus muscle steaks from Tuli, Hereford, Angus, Piedmontese and Belgian Blue progeny were signifi- cantly more tender than those from Boran and Brahman progeny. Progeny of Tuli sires were similar to progeny of Hereford and Angus sires in carcass composition, marbling and tenderness. |
