Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Using the solvent sequence, water, neutral pyrophosphate (Pyro), Pyro pH 10.6, Pyro + NaOH, and resins in tandem, HS from the Ao and Ah horizons of a forested podzol, and from a neighbouring (Ah horizon) deforested podzol were isolated and fractionated. Analyses, using 1H- and 13C-NMR, FT-IR and fluorescence spectroscopy, elemental, sugar and amino acid analyses, various derivitization and degradation procedures, delta **13C and delta **15N, and titration data have shed new light on the similarities and differences between the various HS fractions. Results from relatively new two-dimensional NMR are very promising with regard to identifications of component molecules and, in combination with classical and modern physico- chemical procedures, can be expected to significantly advance awareness of structures.
