Validity of the technique for scrapie diagnosis was established by a comparison of IHC results with those obtained by western blot assay, the target tissue being suspect sheep brains submitted to the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories. Similar trials are underway to determine if IHC is an effective test for detecting PrP in lymphoid tissues of sheep that are in preclinical stages of the disease. The reliability of IHC for identification of PrP in tissues from cattle with experimentally induced scrapie is also being investigated. |
