Interpretive Summary: Thailand exports approximately 300,000 tons of aromatic long-grain rice annually to the U.S. to satisfy the needs of southeast Asian immigrants for such rice. 'Jasmine 85' is the first domestically adapted rice variety with the aromatic flavor and texture of the Thai rices. It was tested in the USDA-ARS/state program at Beaumont, TX and released to the southern U.S. rice growers in 1989 to provide a domestic source of aromatic rice an also reduce the need for imports as well as expanding market opportunities for U.S. producers.

Technical Abstract: Jasmine 85' is the first U.S. long-grain cultivar possessing the aromatic flavor and cooking quality of the highly prized fragrant rice from Thailand. Jasmine 85 acquired its Thai taste and texture qualities from Khao Dawk Mali-105', a major rice variety grown in northeast Thailand. Its upright plant type, relatively short stature and insensitivity to photoperiod came from IR 262', a line developed at the International Rice Research Institute from the cross Peta*3/Taichung Native 1'. It was released for production in the U.S. in 1989 to recapture some of the market filled by annual imports of some 300,000 tons of Thai Jasmine rice from Thailand.
