Interpretive Summary: The application of pesticides in irrigation water (chemigation) or through pivot attached sprayers (PASS) is an effective and economical application method. There is an increase in irrigated crop land, therefore, there is a need to evaluate agrichemicals for chemigation and PASS to more effectively use the irrigation systems. The effectiveness of the insecticide, lorsban, applied by chemigation, PASS, and a conventional sprayer was compared for insect control in corn. Control of the fall armyworm on corn with lorsban was better with chemigation and PASS than conventional sprayer applications because the large volume of water delivered the insecticide deep into the corn whorl where the insects feed. PASS was not as good as chemigation for applying lorsban at reduced rates on some treatment dates. PASS has potential for applying some pesticides that are not registered for or compatible with chemigation systems. Therefore, producers who install PASS can increase the use of their irrigation systems for applying agrichemicals.

Technical Abstract: The effectiveness of chlorpyrifos chemigated with an irrigation system simulator, pivot attached sprayer systems (PASS), and a conventional sprayer was compared for insect control in whorl stage corn. Chlorpyrifos controlled fall armyworm on corn better with chemigation and PASS than when applied with a conventional sprayer. The large volume of water with chemigation delivered the insecticide to the whorl where the insects feed. PASS was not as good as chemigation for applying chlorpyrifos at reduced rates. However, PASS has potential for applying some pesticides that are not compatible with chemigation systems.
