Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A collaborative effort by USDA, INIAP, and IPGRI involved collection of Ecuadorian peanut landraces using a comprehensive collecting strategy. Nearly two hundred accessions of native peanuts were collected over a two year period, including at least five of the six known botanical varities of Arachis hypogaea. The exploration established a national collection of native peanut diversity in Ecuador, with a duplicate collection conserved in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System. In follow-up effort to increase the benefits of U.S.-sponsored plant explorations in Ecuador, the collected materials were then increased and characterized in Ecuador by Eduadorians using USDA peanut descriptors and funds. A U.S. peanut breeder provided training on peanut characterization to Ecuadorian scientists. This effort is an example of how benefits can be shared and international germplasm exchange can be enhanced through increased collaboration between the U.S. and germplasm donor countries.
