Technical Abstract: This chapter discusses prediction of downward movement of water in the vadose zone, based on previously developed methods for measuring infiltration rates with cylinder infiltrometers, and hydraulic conductivity in the vadose zone with air-entry permeameters and the infiltration gradient technique. Application to irrigation, recharge, and contaminant transport systems are discussed, as well as the effects of preferential flow through cracks, rootholes, wormholes, and other macropores.
