Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and macrophages were localized and counted in the ovaries and oviducts of 150-day-old laying hens by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies against chicken CD3, CD4, CD8, IgA, IgG, IgM, and macrophages. T lymphocytes and macrophages were identified by avidin-biotin-peroxidase method whereas B lymphocytes by indirect immunofluorescent method. All kinds of cells were scattered throughout the ovaries and oviducts especially in the lamina propria of the mucosal folds. Small lymphnodules lacking proper demarcations were mainly observed in the upper regions of the oviduct. Larger numbers of T lymphocytes of all subclasses and macrophages were mainly found in the vagina, ovary, and infundibulum whereas B lymphocytes were mainly in the magnum and isthmus. CD8+ cells were occasionally observed in the intra-epithelial spaces and densely accumulated in the bases of folds. B cells containing IgA and IgM were mainly found just below the epithelial layer whereas IgG+ cells were mainly located around the tubular glands of magnum and isthmus. The ovary did not contain any IgG+ cells.
