Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A Java graphics user-friendly web interface was developed for scientists, teachers and students to access plant, weather and soil databases required for plant growth simulation studies. The three databases are managed by Microsoft Access which is an industry standard and proprietary database management system. With a Java-embedded web browser, users can link to the run-time Java program from our website and gain access to the interface. When the users have chosen a plant genotype from the plant database to do plant growth simulation studies, they may choose different environmental conditions from each of the other two databases containing site-specific weather and a set of soil characteristic values, and may input agronomic data, such as planting date, row spacing, etc. into text fields provided by the interface. They can see an on-screen display of data points returned from the weather database between input starting and ending simulation days. Selected soil property values and plant growth parameter values for each included soil or plant species entry in the respective database can also be displayed on-screen. The output is displayed in both figure and text forms by clicking appropriately marked buttons for such state variables as LAI, plant height, photosynthesis, biomass, etc. Data from the databases combined with other data from user experiments are useful to evaluate whether model predictions are correct.
