Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Volatile chemicals released by animals (pheromones) and plants into the environment signal such things as mating readiness when released by conspecifics, or the presence of a potential host plant for feeding or oviposition when released by a plant. These messages seldom, if ever, occur in isolation; thus the receiver must detect, decipher, and integrate chemical signals from a number of sources. In general, separate channels exist at the peripheral level for the detection of pheromone and plant odor information. Interactions between these different types of chemicals are thought to involve neural processes in the brain. Synergism is observed in which behavioral responses to pheromones (as measured by assays of attraction in both the laboratory and the field) are enhanced by the presence of host plant odors.
