Four of these are dual purpose russets suitable for fresh market and french fry processing from storage. These are A81473-2(unnamed), A8495-1 (unnamed), AO82611-7 (proposed name Umatilla Russet), and C0083008-1 (proposed name Russet Legend). A fifth, A82360-7 (unnamed), is a processing type. All of these offer advantages over the standard varieties, Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet. The new varieties will generally have higher resistance to early dying diseases, leafroll net necrosis, and internal blackspot. Improved external quality is apparent in the higher percentage of U.S. No. 1 potatoes compared to Russet Burbank. All of these selections have higher specific gravity than Russet Burbank, and several have better french fry color from storage. |
