Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Mussaenda macrophylla Wall. (Rubiaceae) ("dhobini") is a shrub with alternative flowers and is used for medicinal purposes in Nepal. Both the root bark and fruits are reported to possess sweetness-enhancing properties. No phytochemical work has been performed on this species to date. Three triterpene saponins (1-3) have been isolated from a n-BuOH extract fraction of the root bark of M. macrophylla. The structures of these compounds have been characterized by several spectroscopic methods including 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques.
