Reliable methods are needed to evaluate resistances of varieties to the disease. A method was developed in which seedlings are inoculated with spores of the fungus and then incubated in a growth chamber. Seedlings of a susceptible variety treated in this manner showed more disease after 4 or 5 days than did those of a resistant variety. This method will provide a useful assay for evaluating host resistance to this seedling disease, thereby helping breeders to develop varieties with better disease resistance. |
