Technical Abstract: If a swine producer had a choice in terms of increasing efficiency of reproduction, what would it be? Many producers, would answer that they would like to predetermine or control the sex of each pig in the litter. As a USDA scientist working on this high priority problem for the Agricultural Research Service for the past 16 years, it has been our goal to provide the producer with such an opportunity. The purpose of this article is explain our sex preselection research, and give and update on how far we have come since 1982. and give some indication about the future use of sex preselection in the swine herd utilizing the Beltsville Sperm Sexing Technology.
