Interpretive Summary: Three low palmitic acid and five low stearic acid sunflower genetic stocks were developed cooperatively by USDA-ARS and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. These genetic stocks were derived from a mutagenesis program designed to lower the saturated acid content of sunflower lines. These genetic stocks are available for use by sunflower industry and public researchers in basic genetic studies and to use in crosses to create germplasm with oil lower in saturated fatty acids as recommended by current USDA dietary guidelines for human health. By combining the genes controlling low palmitic acid with the genes controlling low stearic acid into one line, the oil of sunflower would be nearly 30 percent less in saturated fatty acids than traditional hybrids. Potato chips fried in such oil could be labeled as low in saturated fat, having less than 1 gram of saturated fat per 28.4 gram (1 ounce) serving. Crosses have been initiated to combine the genes into one line and also to cross these genetic stocks to mid-oleic (NuSun) lines to reduce saturated fat even further.

Technical Abstract: Three low palmitic acid and five low stearic acid sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genetic stocks were developed cooperatively by USDA-ARS and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. These genetic stocks were derived from a mutagenesis program designed to lower the saturated acid content of sunflower lines. These genetic stocks are available for use by sunflower industry and public researchers in basic genetic studies and to use in crosses to create germplasm with oil lower in saturated fatty acids. Three inbred lines, RHA 274, HA 821, and HA 382, were selected for mutagenesis. The two chemical mutagens used were NMU and EMS at 1 and 2% concentrations. RHA 274 (LP-1) and RHA 274 (LP-2) were selected for low palmitic acid of 4.79% and 4.67%, compared to 6.67% for the check. HA 821 (LP-1) was selected for a low palmitic acid of 4.12% compared to 5.75% for the check. RHA 274 (LS-1) and RHA 274 (LS-2) were selected for low stearic acid of 2.22% and 1.97%, compared to 4.81% for the check. HA 821 (LS-1), HA 382 (LS-1), and HA 382 (LS-2) were selected for low stearic acid of 4.11%, 3.54%, and 2.97%, respectively, compared to 6.55% and 5.95% for the checks. Crosses have been initiated to combine the genes into one line to reduce saturated fat even further.
