Interpretive Summary: This is a primary reference work on the genetic variations of corn, with extensive illustrations, descriptions, and genetic maps. The publisher's description states that this book "can be considered a general guide to the consequences of mutation in the entire plant kingdom." Differences among and between species are reflected as well in modifications of form, development, color, and growth, as represented in the individual and mutual variations described in detail in the book.

Technical Abstract: This book is a foundation for the developing biotechnological era for corn; it contains introductory parts on the history of cooperation in maize genetics, and the Stock Center, Database, and Annual Maize Genetics Conference. The maize organism is described pictorially and sequentially, from fertilization through gamete formation. Genetic and cytological maps, and tools of genetic and cytogenetic research, follow. The central feature of the book is color photographs of almost all of the well-established mutants, and detailed descriptions, based upon information provided by specialists in that area of study. Tables of genetic interactions, pathways of metabolism and their genetic control, and descriptions of the structure of cloned genes, are included, as are references for all citations.
