Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to investigate feasibility of combined use of resident concentrations and time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements for estimating solute transport model parameters. A new technique based on resident concentration for estimating two domain solute transport model parameters (immobile water content, Wim, and mass exchange coefficient, alpha) has been successfully used to characterize solute transport in soil, and TDR has also shown the potential to delineate solute transport. We developed a simple field procedure for obtaining solute transport model parameters using combined resident concentrations and TDR measurements. The method uses a series of fluorobenzoate tracers for estimating Wim, alpha, and TDR (vertically installed probes) measurements for estimating dispersion coefficient, D. In the laboratory experiments, we compared the estimates of Wim, alpha, and D from the new method versus those obtained from effluent breakthrough curve data. In the field experiments, water content and soil hydraulic properties were measured as well.
