Technical Abstract: This chapter provides an integrated review of the growth and body composition of the pig, including the following: Allometric and non-allome growth. Physiology of growth of muscle, bone and adipose tissue. Prenatal growth of selected organs and tissues and compositional changes. Postnatal growth, development and changes in composition, including; postnatal survival, runts and growth from weaning to market. Nutrient accretion and transformations with particular reference to protein and lipid deposition. The nutritional and genetic determinants of obesity, body composition and growth in swine. Growth and composition of the edible carcass as influenced by nutrition (protein and energy intake), somatotropin (growth hormone), growth hormone-releasing factor, beta-adrene agonists, anabolic steroids, appetite (leptin and cholecystokinin), dietary chromium, antibiotics, effect of immune response, sex effects on growth and composition and the transgenic pig model for growth enhancement. This chapter also includes 11 tables, 14 figures and 473 references.
