Interpretive Summary: Flower flies are found throughout the Palearctic Region (Europe, North Africa and Asia). They breed in a wide range of habitats: some are phytophagous; some aid in nutrient re-cycling; and others are predators of various plant pests. The adults are all pollinators of flowers. A few of the Old World species are serious pests of plant bulbs and others have been introduced into North America for biological control of thistles. The group is used as an indicator of environmental health. This book chapter documents the basic classification currently used, provides an identification key to the groups of these flies and a general introduction to the group and the literature about them. The information will be useful to scientists studying these flies and to action agency personnel charged with identifying them.
