Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A swine testicular cell culture supporting production of our laboratory challenge strain of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) was found to be contaminated with a bovine viral diarrhea virus strain (BVDV-C) derived from commercial fetal bovine serum. Neonatal pigs orally inoculated with TGEV/BVDV-C or purified BVDV-C developed severe diarrhea and enteritis with hlymphocyte depletion of Peyer's patches, spleen, and thymus. Pigs inoculated with purified TGEV developed enteritis without lymphocyte depletion. Pigs inoculated with BVDV strain NY-1 did not develop diarrhea or lesions.
