Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The book reviews a text compiled as a comprehensive yet concise text on photosynthesis for use as an advanced-level textbook and as a general reference for faculty and research scientists. Although several multi-volume works cover photosynthesis in detail, no adequate text is available that is sufficiently comprehensive within a single volume. The wealth of information and topics pertaining to photosynthesis makes the compilation of such a volume particularly challenging. The editor has done a commendable job of presenting the subject matter in a logical progression, thoroughly covering the most critical aspects of photosynthesis at the molecular, biochemical, and whole plant levels, and complementing this material with chapters covering several areas of special interest. This book is a pleasure to read, featuring well-written chapters by noted authors. Of note is the inclusion of both a thorough coverage of the basic photosynthetic processes at the subcellular and molecular levels and the aspects of photosynthesis important from an ecological and agronomic standpoint. The special topics are both timely and interesting. On the whole, this book should serve well as a starting point for the study of photosynthesis.
