Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Multiple outbreaks of enteric disease attributed to S. typhimurium DT104 were diagnosed in a contract swine finishing barn in central Ohio. This barn was constructed in September of 1997, and is operated as an all in/all out operation. Each of the three groups of swine which have occupied the facility have experienced a single outbreak of severe enteric disease affecting a small proportion of animals in the facility. During each outbreak, S. typhimurium DT104 was recovered from sick hogs. Approximately 6 weeks following the third outbreak, 120 fresh fecal samples were collected from throughout the facility. Of these, Salmonella spp were recovered from 59 (49%) and 54 were identified as serogroup B. Multiple serogroup B isolates have been identified as S. typhimurium resistant to chloramphenicol, although definitive phage type identification is pending. It appears that subclinical shedding of the organism was common for some time following the resolution of clinical disease in this population. S. typhimurium resistant to chloramphenicol was also recovered from 1 of 183 fecal samples collected from a dairy operated by the same family, but not from 80 fecal samples obtained from a nearby independent contract swine finishing operation which receives hogs and feed from the same source. Multiple non-typhimurium Salmonella spp were recovered from the dairy and the comparison swine facility, although salmonellosis outbreaks have not been observed in these operations.
