Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The butyrophilin protein has been found exclusively in the mammary gland of dairy cattle, and its expression is limited to late pregnancy and lactation. Butyrophilin may play some role in milk secretion and/or have an immune function. Therefore, polymorphisms within the gene could be used to investigate the gene's association with economically important traits such as milk production and health. Five polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP) were identified within the butyrophilin genomic sequence and are reported here. Putative associations were investigated in 5 polymorphic Holstein families in the granddaughter design. The statistical analyses did not yield significant marker allele differences in the milk production and health traits considered.
