Publication Type: Book / Chapter Publication Acceptance Date: 7/15/1998 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Recent advances in oat cytology, transformation, isolation and characterization of important genes, and the use of maize pollen in the derivation of fertile haploids and alien chromosome addition lines, have enhanced the study and characterization of oat genomes. The development of molecular markers has allowed the construction of extensive linkage maps in nmany crop species based on Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) or PCR. Due to the complexity of genetic analyses and segregation patterns in hexaploid oat, a number of strategies have been followed to simplify the development of a cultivated oat genomic map. The concurrent development of molecular maps in diploid oat and specific chromosome arms in hexaploid oat is providing a more comprehensive picture of genome organization in the genus Avena. In this report, we summarize the mapping efforts of a consortium of scientists at Agriculture Canada-Ottawa, Cornell University, Iowa State University, University of Minnesota, and the Agricultural Research Service-United States Department of Agriculture for the development of an RFLP map for cultivated oat. |
