Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: For surface irrigation, it is often difficult to determine the actual infiltration relationship for the soil from observation of an irrigation event. This manuscript discusses an approach published by Cahoon as a technical note in the Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering. The discussion points out that the procedures presented in that note focus too much on parameter values rather than on the important features of the infiltration relationship. Also, the authors did not take advantage of existing literature on the subject, and as a result, their work is inconclusive. Alternative approaches are suggested for determining an infiltration function from field observations.
