Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The reproductive processes in domestic poultry differ substantially from those of other farm animals because the bird must ovulate single ova at frequent intervals, and produce a fertilized egg which fulfills all of the needs of the developing embryo without further maternal input. This chapter provides an overview of the specialized avian egg, the structure and function of the single oviduct, and the unique aspects of the bird's ovary and reproductive endocrine system which permit this highly efficient production of offspring.
