The field was naturally infested with the wilt pathogen F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis. Isolates of nonpathogenic F. oxysporum (CS-20, SA70, Fs-7 and Fo-7), F. solani (CS-1), Gliocladium (Trichoderma) virens (G-37, G-4, G6, G10 and Gl-3), an unidentified bacterium M3, Burkholderia vietnamiensis (Bc-F), and Streptomyces spp. (B-B1-4-1). Biocontrol agents were added at seeding and prior to transplanting. In 1997, no treatments were different from the nontreated control for yield, disease severity or disease incidence. In 1998, there were no treatment effects on disease severity or yield. There were no differences in disease incidence, except for disease evaluated 7 weeks after transplantation when disease incidence was significantly lower for plants treated with B-B1-4-1 than in the nontreated control. There was a high level of variability with all parameters tested in both years. This information will be used by scientists developing environmentally benign control measures for use against Fusarium wilt.
