Publication Type: Review Article Publication Acceptance Date: 2/28/1999 Publication Date: N/A Citation: N/A Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This is a review of Volume 1 (of two), Soil and Water Conservation, Challenges and Opportunities; a compilation of papers presented at the 8th International Soil Conservation Conference held in New Delhi, India, December 4-8, 1994. The overall thrust of the conference and this book involved presenting a multidisciplinary approach to conservation of soil resources within the socio-economic and technical capability of all participating nations. The focus of the conference papers was enhanced by the topical section-organization and, generally, the lead papers that introduced each topic. The section topics in Volume 1 are: Section I: Land Degradation Status: (Regional Perspective); Section II: Land Degradation Assessment; Section III: Degradation and Sustainable Agriculture; Section IV: Factors Affecting Erosion; Section V: Conservation Measures and Impact; Section VI: Modeling for Conservation and Productivity. The book is a well organized collection of papers that provides a valuable source of general information and concepts. Without the benefit of adequate indexing by topic, the enormous amount of information present in these two volumes (1700 pages) will require extensive searching by readers. It is unfortunate that these papers were four years finding their way into print, which dates some topics and issues. The overall presentation of information is of good quality with respect to graphics and style. Although some errors are present, they do not detract from the manuscript's understandability. Arguably, some duplication of concepts may have occurred in this material; however, the vast range in author experiences better illustrates those common concepts. This work would be a useful addition to any soil science library. |
