Soybean hulls are currently incorporated into chicken feed although they may contain useful components in greater quantity than the meats. In this research, soy hulls were exhaustively extracted with hexane to give 4.2% of the hulls by weight. This was followed with a methanol extraction to give 8.0% of the hulls by weight. Lipophilic components were separated by reverse-phase HPLC, open column chromatography, and other techniques, followed by wet chemical, mass spectroscopic, gas chromatographic, and infrared characterization. The principle lipid components were triglycerides and phospholipids similar to those found in soybean cotyledons. Other minor lipid components found will be presented. |
