The problem is so universal and severe that many growers fumigate or heat treat greenhouse planting mixes or plant extra seeds in fields to ensure a good stand. In addition, seeds are routinely treated with chemicals to prevent or delay the onset of seedling diseases. These diseases include seed rot, preemergence damping off, post emergence damping off, wirestem, and seedling blight. This article briefly discusses the symptoms of each of these diseases and directs the reader to control methods outlined in the literature. In addition, the major pathogens responsible for these diseases are briefly discussed. This popular article will be useful to extension agents and home gardeners.
